Welcome to week 2 of my 52 weeks of Eurovision, If you missed last week’s post you can find it here
This week I give you… Celine Dion.
As Im sure you will know, The French Canadian Titanic singer has achieved a successful singing career with worldwide success as a solo artist and also collaboration with acts such as Barbra Stresand, The Bee Gees and Il Divo.
What a lot of people don’t know (except the avid Eurovision fans of course), is that Celine Dion shot to fame after winning the Eurovision Song Contest on behalf of Switzerland on April 30th 1988 with ‘Ne Partez Pas sans Moi” which translated is ‘Don’t leave without me’. (Obviously they had ran out of Swiss singers in the eighties) Prior to the contest, Celine was a little known singer in the ‘French speaking’ world.
The contest took place in Dublin and it was a bit of a controversial win as the United Kingdom were in the lead throughout until the very last vote came in from Yugoslavia which placed Switzerland in the lead by 1 point, beating Scott Fitzgerald from the UK.
Here is Celine in her power suit jacket and tutu… (it wouldn’t be eurovision without a touch of camp).
On a separate note to show my support for all things Celine and Eurovision…..here is my tattoo in homage to this 1988 triumph. (I really am a fan).
