Welcome to a whole new series of weekly posts to celebrate the last 60 Years of The Eurovision Song contest
Ok , so yes I have fallen into the stereotype here, for my adoration for the cheesy annual über-camp, political music-fest, but you have to agree that there have been some great songs amongst the plethora of noise that is offered up from some of our more primitive European neighbours.
Equally there have been a number of recognisable faces that have gone on to achieve success in ‘different’ areas.
This week, and probably in need of a new agent after her demise in Albert Square…I give you Samantha Womack (Samantha Janus back in the day).
In 1991 an 18 year old Samantha represented the UK, singing “Message to your Heart” at the contest in Rome finishing joint 10th position with Ireland. Not a bad achievement by today’s standards, although the points awarded were low and consistent (with the exception of Malta who gave 10 points). In a year of joint-places , both France and Sweden went on to win the competition.
Samantha Womack went on become an actress and has performed in a number of roles culminating in the tragic Ronnie Mitchell in Eastenders until she left the show in 2016 when her character drowned with her sister on her Wedding day in the hotel pool on New Year’s day 2017
Not a particularly strong contender in the 52 week showdown…..but in homage to Ronnie Mitchell. …. (Ignore the 1st minute …..this isn’t the song).
Who will week 2 be?
